I would go as far as to say that he was our best attacking player on the day. He played a part in our first goal by beating his man and finding Cesc, he effectively tracked back to help Sagna and contributed to some great pass and move football

I watched this one with a pal of mine in a pub near Highbury, we sat down with our homemade burger and chips and watched the pre match ESPN talk and I said.
“Wouldn’t it be nice to f**k up a team good and proper? when was the last time we did that?”
Perhaps that should be my line before every game.
All the waiting and talk about the new season is now over, it was time for Arsenal to let their feet to the talking. The mighty Arsenal blew Everton away for six in a wonderful team display.
The team lined up pretty much as I imagined. Song and Denilson sitting and Cesc being allowed to push forward and support a front three of Bendtner, Van Persie and Arshavin.

I thought the early stages were pretty close, both teams full of commitment and urgency. As the game went on we started to get our passing together, which was not quite clicking in the early exchanges. Nicklas Bendtner was looking sharp on the right, joining in with Van Persie and beating players when needed.
My man of the match has to go to Alexandre Song who looks like he has taken another step higher since his impressive progression from the end of last season. We know he is strong and can win high balls as well as making blocks but his composure on the ball is outstanding. He was swerving past midfielders as if they were not there. He won the ball back and found the pass. Song was often the man detailed to pick up the tall Fellaini, and he did very well. He out jumped the big man at times and often put Fellaini off his jump and header.
I have never seen a bigger improvement from a player, than that of Alex Song.
Thomas Vermaelen was making his debut after missing the Emirates Cup along with our trip to Valencia, I was expecting to watch a player who was trying to get accustomed to football in the Premier League but I witnessed a natural defender. A player who was willing to put his body on the line. As debuts go, this ranked very highly. A wonderful header past Howard for our second goal. He managed to do everything that was asked of him with some added composure to boot.
It is very early days but with Gallas alongside Vermaelen and Denilson and Song protecting our defence, I can envisage a massive improvement from last season’s defensive record.
William Gallas looks like he is enjoying his football again, you could see the delight in his face when he glanced in our third.
Denilson had a shaky start to the game, making his usual blocks and interceptions but giving the ball away too cheaply on a few occasions. His goal more than made up for his early errors. Nicklas Bendtner who had a storming very confident display found Cesc who rolled it to Denilson with an invitation attached. Denilson kindly responded with a powerful curled effort high into Howard’s net. Denilson improved after his goal and joined in our attacking play.
As I noted in the Hanover 96 game where Wenger first played the midfield trio of Denilson, Song and Cesc. Fabregas was allowed to get beyond the forwards and threaten the Everton goal. Cesc scored in the friendly against the Germans by latching onto a Van Persie pass, the same applied at Goodison. Van Persie in the left channel played it low into the path of the Spaniard, and he fired low in between Howard’s legs, it may have been slightly fortuitous the way it went through the goalkeeper but he had to make the run, make the gamble and go for goal.
Everton allowed him far too much space for his second but his strike was low and skidded into the corner of the net. In this role Cesc Fabregas can score goals this season. He can be Arsenal’s Lampard. He can get back to his form of 2007/08.
I was unsure about Nicklas Bendtner playing from the right, would he be able to penetrate from that side? Could he get past players? Would he contribute effectively enough? Well he passed those questions with flying colours. Infact I would go as far as to say that he was our best attacking player on the day. He played a part in our first goal by beating his man and finding Cesc, he effectively tracked back to help Sagna and contributed to some great pass and move football.
When Eduardo took to the field I knew that he would get on the scoresheet. You cannot score a bucket full of goals and not give a scoop to Eduardo. He was Johnny on the spot after Arshavin’s toe poke hit the base of the post, Eduardo being Eduardo was in the right place in the right time to open his account for the new season.
So what impressed me the most about the victory? Our passing game? No, we already know that this group of players are capable of out passing most teams, especially in the Premier League. I think we have some more gears to go up in terms of keeping the ball and creating chances.
Scoring six goals? Obviously hitting six goals at a tough ground like Goodison Park is going to be impressive, but to be honest if we scored just two or three I would have been impressed.
What was most pleasing about the performance was the hunger and commitment to win the ball back when not in possession. It wasn’t just the midfield, it was the whole team. Even little Arshavin was making slide tackles outside his penalty area. If this team can continue with that attitude then there is no reason why we cannot be the very best in the Premier League.
