Football variables and Arsene’s balancing act

Much has been made of Cesc’s role further forward and I have little doubt that he is better suited to the deeper role alongside Song, Denilson etc. I cannot help but think that Arsene has ‘balancing the team’ firmly in his thoughts

The game last night was a rollercoster of emotions to say the very least. A rested and committed Liverpool side were overpowering us for long periods of the game and it could have all worked out completely differently. That is football.

To me football is about so many variables, that is why two matches are never the same.

I remember trying to make my own Championship Manager game on my old Amstrad 464 using BBC basic and that was filled with variables. How often a player can find a team mate, what ability the player has, how much confidence he has, how the supporters effect the players.

We could have lost the game 6-0 on another day but we could have easily won the game 5-3 had we played the right pass when Reina was doing his best Peter Schmeichel impression.

That is what makes football so special and unique. Arshavin did not have his best game for Arsenal as I mentioned in the Match Review but his finishing variables were perfect every time. That was the difference between a ‘Anonymous Arshavin fails to prove Wenger wrong’ headlines to the ones he has now.

Alex Song was fantastic yet again, the best Arsenal midfielder on the pitch which includes Cesc Fabregas.

Much has been made of Cesc’s role further forward and I have little doubt that he is better suited to the deeper role alongside Song, Denilson etc. I cannot help but think that Arsene has ‘balancing the team’ firmly in his thoughts. Many of his recent interviews he speaks of the importance of balance in the team. The improvement defensively started after that terrible performance against Manchester City away. Our team went back to basics, Song and Denilson were a massive aid to the back four and Wenger does not want to harm those foundations built from two hard working ball winning midfielders.

Currently our defence is looking weak with Silvestre lacking games and sharpness, Djourou could be back in the team soon alongside Toure to provide some calm.

Right, back tomorrow with some more news and thoughts, hopefully some good news on the injury front *crosses fingers*
