Half way through International sentence / Gazidis words twisted / Merida

Cesc is playing on top of his game right now and that is great for Arsenal. If he continues to play the way he is playing then he will force his way into the Spanish side from now on, you cannot ignore the kind of quality we witnessed last Sunday

Today is almost like being half way through your prison sentence, not long to go but you still have suffer the agony of International football. Is it me or is this the worst it has ever been? I mean in days gone by it was just an insignificant obstruction but nowadays International football is my enemy. I am sure many Gooners out there still love watching England and to some, it means more than watching their club side but on a personal level, I cannot relate to that way of thinking whatsoever.

But its ok, because we have an average squad with very little depth so we shouldn’t have many Internationals in the squad, ah but wait, that cannot be right.

Quite a few of our players were in action last night and many made an impact for their countries. Cesc Fabregas wearing the number 10 shirt for Spain must have thought he was Dennis Bergkamp for a moment as he ran onto a Xavi pass, on the bounce he flicked it over the goalkeepers head into the opposite corner of the net. He also played the pass for the Spanish player to get fouled in the box to gain his country a penalty which they converted.

Cesc is playing on top of his game right now and that is great for Arsenal. If he continues to play the way he is playing then he will force his way into the Spanish side from now on, you cannot ignore the kind of quality we witnessed last Sunday. If he can do that regularly then without wanting to jump the gun, you would have to say that he could well be in contention to become player of the year. But there is plenty of football to go so just pretend I didn’t actually make that comment.

Cesc is due to miss the match against Bosnia due to a “serious family matter” so lets hope whatever the problem is that it can be resolved.

If you have an International fantasy football team with Philippe Senderos at the heart of your defence then you would have gained a decent amount of points as the giant Swiss scored two and kept a clean sheet. His second a lovely deft glance into the corner of the net.

Who needs Van Persie and Bendtner when we can quite easily just play a new forward partnership of Senderos and Vermaelen, if Wenger wants to continue the three man attack then Gallas has scored his fair share. God knows why managers like Wenger are getting paid so much money when the answers are right in front of us.

William Gallas scored at the far post for France after a wonderful cross from Thierry Henry. Carlos Vela netted the fourth for Mexico in a 4-1 victory.

Away from the International scene the papers have created a Wenger must win a trophy now or be thrown to the Lions type stories. new chief executive Ivan Gazidis has been speaking about the ambitions of the club.

“It’s absolutely our ambition to win a trophy this year. I couldn’t be more clear on that, Second, third or fourth isn’t good enough. We want to win something this season and we believe we have the squad to do that. We have created and developed a team playing fantastic football, It’s wonderful to watch and very exciting at times.

“We’ve spoken about the group’s potential. Now, and by now I mean this season, it’s very important for us to focus strongly on winning something for the fans. They deserve it. We can talk about football as a business but, fundamentally, this club exists for the fans and they don’t care about financial reports, they care about what happens on the pitch.”

Predictably this is now being transformed into win a trophy or there are problems forgetting that Arsene’s desire to win trophies will be higher than anyone else’s. Arsene is and will always be a winner, he has developed a group of talented young players who are at a stage where their potential has to be realised. Regardless of what the press have been saying, Wenger, Gazidis and hopefully the players will all be on the same page, they all want to win and will do all within their powers to win silverware.

We came within a whisker of winning the league in season 2007/08 until we crumbled at the end. I can honestly say that this squad is far stronger than that squad, the league on the whole is stronger than two years ago but I would say that our direct rivals are weaker.

Fran Merida is said to be flattered by the Atletico Madrid reported interest.

Merida said:

“Atletico are one of the best clubs in Spain and a Champions League club and I am really pleased by the interest in me, This is news to make me content but I have a deal signed with Arsenal until June 2010 and I still have not decided my future.”

“I have not accepted the offer from Arsenal for five more seasons but this does not change things. I want to study the situation calmly and decide what is best.”

You can totally understand a) Madrid’s supposed interest and b) Merida’s dilemma.

I think he is a fantastic talent with a wonderful array of passing. The trouble for him is that Aaron Ramsey appears to be ahead of him in the pecking order and is a year younger, in a midfield that is already blessed with attacking genius then even the likes of Merida will have a struggle to find his way into the squad. If Merida had the height and strength of someone like Song then he would have a better chance of playing first team football.

I would love Merida to stay at Arsenal but at this stage of his career continuous reserve football will not be enough for him, especially after lighting up the Spanish under 20s squad.

That is about that for now, more tomorrow.
