How Dudu will return / The need for a defensive midfielder

When Eduardo hit his goalscoring streak I remember thinking that it is now a case of who plays with him. To be honest, that could be said about any of our forward who are given a run in the side and hit form

I can imagine it now, his name had already received a huge cheer when it was announced before kick off as a substitute and on 80 minutes Pat Rice tells him to warm up, the atmosphere in the stadium instantly changes as the Gooners anticipate the return of a player who suffered such a horrific career threatening injury away at St Andrews last season. Eduardo unzips his training top and the crowd applaud.

Robin Van Persie looks over at his shoulder and can see the electric board ’11/9′

Robin jogs off with his hands clapping above his head, he meets Eduardo on the touchline gives him a hug and the Brazilian Croatian jogs on to one of the biggest receptions a player could wish for.

I am looking forward to that moment and thought about it a few days after he suffered that injury, we all wondered if he would make it back into football but luckily the deadly assassin can see the first team in his sights. 3 weeks away from competing in training against the others. It will take him a while to get to match sharpness as it took him a while to adjust last season so it could be a similar situation this time round with maybe more caution applied.

When Eduardo hit his goalscoring streak I remember thinking that it is now a case of who plays with him. To be honest, that could be said about any of our forward who are given a run in the side and hit form.

Those two goals against Everton last season when we were not playing that well told us all we need to know about Eduardo.

When he is in the side it is not a case of having 70% possession and being ‘unlucky’ infront of goal, with Eduardo that does not happen. He is a born goalscorer, like Ian Rush, Ian Wright, Gary Liniker, Robbie Fowler were. They have many types of finishes and different situations. I think only Ed and Vela have that in our squad.

It got to a point during his good spell against Burnley in the FA Cup when he missed a chance I was confused, couldn’t quite register what happened. This was obviously after his jumper for goalposts finish early in the game.

Arsene said:

“Eduardo is three weeks away from playing competitive football, [Rosicky] should be back after Christmas.”

Robin Van Persie, the man to come off for him in the future (just got back in my home made time machine) also agrees that we need the striker in our squad.

He is really important,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports News.

“We were all really unhappy with what happened but I think he dealt with it really well and showed a lot of maturity.

“If you look at his finishing record, we need him.”

I get the impression that the Rosicky target is just to shut everyone up about it and not pressure the player to return. His operation was supposed to cure the problem but it appears to have created its own problems. I really hope that if when he returns it will be the end of this horrible injury nightmare.

To lose a player as creative, talented and importance to the squad is massive, I think his absence is often quite underrated. He scores goal, keeps the team ticking with his intelligent passing. And he puts his foot in. I am a massive Rosicky fan and just hope he can fight to get into the team sooner than later.

A part of me is hoping that Arsene has set the return date further away to create a positive spin on things when he returns at his correct timeframe. Which erm, is in two weeks! ok, maybe wishful thinking on my part.

Arsene seems to have been reading Roy Keane’s new book and has been practicing.

Arsene Said:

“I don’t feel this team gets the support it deserves from the media or our supporters. This team will deliver but the younger you are, the more you need support. The structure of the team is very young and tomorrow we will be better than yesterday. When you go to Fenberbahce with a midfield where the oldest player is 21 and deliver that kind of performance [a 5-2 win] then you have to be positive. We are in a strong position to qualify in the Champions League again and in the Premier League we are four points behind the leaders with enough opportunities to come back.”

It could be a backward way of improving the support at the Emirates. Wenger said something very interesting about players leaving the club.

In yesterdays AGM he was asked about the departures of Flamini and Hleb.

“We want to get players to love the club and not want to move on. I’d like to show you letters from players who left us and how much they’d like to come back.”

Well show then! I would love to know a) who it was from and b) what it said. Is this a recent thing? Or are we talking about Anelka type begging?

Trouble is players will never learn. Flamini = on the bench, Hleb = on the bench, Senderos (although not his fault) = on the bench, Bentley = bottom of the league tosser! haha, oh they make me laugh.

If anyone was at the AGM then it would be great if you could share some details with us, leave it in the comments or contact me but clicking the… you guessed it, contact button.

I have been thinking about this defensive midfielder issue, it is spoken about on most blogs, forums etc on almost a daily basis and I am starting to think about the need for one. Sound crazy do I? Let me break it down a little. Arsenal usually about 60-70% of the ball in most games. It is usually a case of attack vs defence in most matches especially in the Premier League. Last season you could point out the games against Manchester United and Chelsea in the latter part of the campaign and say that we blew the league at our competition but you could also look at the fact that we drew to Birmingham, Middlesborough, Aston Villa and Wigan when we should have won them all.

In Matthieu Flamini we had a box to box tackler who was full of energy and commitment, there is no doubt that this team miss his energy and he should how good is was against Ac Milan in the San Siro where he was absolutely outstanding but for 80% of the season we play against teams who we should beat, or at least are better than. Flamini’s role against the likes of Birmingham City is the same as Fabregas, Hleb (at the time) etc.

Perhaps Arsene wants to turn those draws into victories and playing a technically lacking midfielder is costing us 9 – 15 points a season.

Abou Diaby showed what he can do in the final third of the pitch on Tuesday, he can score goals he can drive through midfield the way that Patrick Vieira used to. He can win matches. Obviously we are not the strongest defensively and the midfield need to help that but why can it not be the whole midfield to contribute? Why does one have to sit in front of Toure and let the Fabgregas do everything on his own. For me, Denilson has been good this season, created goals and scored goals and you cannot fault him for that, he has given the ball away a little cheaply in my eyes from time to time but generally he has been a plus for us. My concern is not with him directly, more the fact that he does the same job as Cesc Fabregas. I was against the Diaby/Cesc during pre season as the idea of a natural defensive player was imprinted in my thoughts but I now begin to think that this is no longer a must.

Diaby adds ingredients that the side does not have at presence in midfield and that is a central drive, power and height. Diaby has played his way into the team after 1 and a bit matches so it would be interesting to see how and what Wenger decides to do with him.

Midfield Matuidi is talking about joining Arsenal but sorry to disappoint, it is not close enough to January for me to talk about that one. I am also going to ignore any ‘A big Italian giant came in for me’ talks, because a) I cannot be arsed b) I cannot be arsed and c) see a and b.

Before I make tracks, let me end by talking about our beloved Dennis Bergkamp. You’ve all read the quotes, but just in case you haven’t..

“At the moment I enjoy doing my badges and I don’t see myself as a top manager, maybe as an assistant,” he told Setanta Sports News.

“I would never say no because I enjoyed it here at Arsenal. It’s a great club to be involved so maybe, hopefully, in the future who knows?”

“They’re doing fantastically,” he added. “The football is still great to watch and I feel that with this type of football they deserve trophies.”

For a club who sign technical young players, who better in the world would you want passing on their knowelege than the superb Dutchman. It would be a great way to intice young players to join the club. I love that guy, after watching him for years I cannot see Arsenal not playing with that half striker it will always be the correct way to play in my eyes even post Wenger.
