Jack Wilshere Out, Midfield Dilemma + Healthy Competition

Wenger has a tough job regarding the patterns we start a game with. We all know that during the past years he has stuck with the 4-3-3 largely because of Cesc. We have still seen this formation being used this term which I’m not against because it gives us fluidity when we attack but while defending

Omomo14 is not stuck in the past but his article was as it was found hiding amongst other pending articles. Anyway, it still makes plenty of sense. ML

Its been confirmed Wilshere will be out for 4 – 5 months. Very bitter pill to swallow knowing fully well we have lost the likes of Cesc and Nasri in midfield. This should have been the season we see Jack come of age. He was instrumental in our quest for 4 trophies last season and grew plaudits from our Manager, the media and rival managers.

I actually want to see our script writer and give him a piece of my  mind, every season we get to see 1 of our key players get struck down by injury.

Jack played more than 40 games for us last term and for one being so young I kind of feel it was a little too much for him, my reason being that he has been dealt with a major injury this term.

By the time he is fit and rearing to go the season should have been reaching its conclusion, how we cope without him is the issue I’m having.

Before the close of the transfer window we saw two new arrivals in midfield – £10m Arteta from Everton and the loan signing of Benayoun from Chelsea.

Our 1st choice Midfield 3 assuming all our players are fit would have been Song – Arteta – Jack, but in recent weeks we have seen a Midfield 3 of Song – Arteta – Ramsey and during this time we have picked up 1 win (Bolton) and 1 loss (Blackburn) in the league.

In the Bolton game we saw a much improved midfield which looked very assured on the ball and picked passes with relative ease. They also worked hard off the ball which is also a good sign. Ramsey picked up one assist with a fine drive from the middle of the pack to set up RVP who finished calmly to set us up for all 3 points. Arteta sat deep and kept the ball rolling while Song played the ‘Essien role’ and came up with a lovely goal right at the death.

Those 3 were convincing but the question still remains if they can carry us for 5 months along with the likes of Rosicky, Benayoun and the returning Diaby(I know he isn’t everybody’s cup of tea). We should also not forget that we have the very young duo of Frimpong and Coquelin.

With those 8 fit and rearing to go who starts from the 1st whistle and who drops to the bench? In my opinion we have got 2 sure starters in Song – Arteta, who fills the 3rd slot is the tricky question. Will Wenger go for the power and drive of Diaby or the Technique and Precision of Rosicky or the engine of Ramsey?

Wenger has a tough job regarding the patterns we start a game with. We all know that during the past years he has stuck with the 4-3-3 largely because of Cesc. We have still seen this formation being used this term which I’m not against because it gives us fluidity when we attack but while defending its a big big worry for me.

Last season we saw the introduction of the 4-2-3-1 with Song and Jack acting as the double pivot while Cesc played in the hole close to RVP. Arshavin is the closest player we have who can play in that Cesc role in this formation. I’ve seen him do it well for Russia and he was also instrumental for Zenit in that role when they lifted the Europa cup at the Ethihad Stadium some years back.

The 4-4-2 has been the formation I have been banging about which I feel in certain games it should be used. Song and Arteta I’m sure will have no qualms anchoring the midfield with Gervinho/Ryo on the left wing and Benayoun/Rosicky/Oxlade-Chamberlain giving us defensive and attacking balance on the right wing.

Cesc left a huge vacuum and I wonder if our midfield can still compete with the top clubs in the league knowing that was our strongest department last season in terms of quality, though the good thing about our midfield this term is that we have got depth.

The season is barely 2 months old and we have had a couple of our midfield players out through injuries and suspension, still we have been able to put out a good midfield. Results might not have gone our way during this period but still we can all see the potential in our midfield and with time we just might start reaping the rewards.
