Happenings at Arsenal this season has dealt a major blow on us fans. Its been a very tough couple of months which has been hard to comprehend. The season started with us being pretty confident about our chances, I for one felt we had a decent squad to really compete for top honours after losing RvP and Alex Song in the summer ‘if’ we made 1 more signing before deadline day, a DM/box to box midfielder to complement what we have in our ranks. Well, Wenger passed on that which I had no qualms with seeing that Diaby looked like he could do an RvP on us and stay fit all season, I was emphatically wrong. Diaby wobbled off injured against Chelsea in the 1st half and from that day we never looked like we could be that force we showed in earlier games most notably Man

I haven’t done this in 5 or so months, being busy cramps on my supposed free time to put my thoughts in words but this is me trying to write a short note.

The season started with us being pretty confident about our chances, I for one felt we had a decent squad to really compete for top honours after losing RvP and Alex Song in the summer ‘if’ we made 1 more signing before deadline day, a DM/box to box midfielder to complement what we have in our ranks. Well, Wenger passed on that which I had no qualms with seeing that Diaby looked like he could do an RvP on us and stay fit all season, I was emphatically wrong. Diaby wobbled off injured against Chelsea in the 1st half and from that day we never looked like we could be that force we showed in earlier games most notably Man City away where we bossed them for good periods. So not buying a cover for Diaby turned out to be a terrible idea.

What does a cover for Diaby do to our team? Well that’s not difficult to decipher. It gives us options, freshens up the midfield and above all gives us real steel to shield our back 4. We have complained a lot about lacking creativity in our ranks but truth is with a DM/box to box MF we can free up Arteta a little bit, push Jack into the number 10 position and shift Santi out wide on the right/left, in doing that we have used 1 stone 2 kill 3 birds. Arteta becomes a lot more creative, Jack can concentrate a lot more in the final 3rd and Santi on the wings gives us real creativity from wide positions.

Creativity from wide positions has been a real problem for us in the past two seasons, and by creativity I don’t mean someone who can put in decent balls into the box or give assists every now and then because Theo and Podolski have done pretty well in that regard but someone who can beat his marker easily, drag players out of position at will, comes in-field and can do something out of the ordinary. That’s what Santi brings to the table, that was what Nasri and Hleb used to do for us a while back and with a DM in our ranks Arsene couldn’t  effectively shift him out wide.

Our midfield looks knackered largely because they have been over-worked, a DM/box to box midfielder should have helped in relieving the likes of Arteta, Jack and Santi. Rotation also comes in where Arsene can choose between the four to form a midfield three partnership on a game to game basis.

I absolutely feel we missed a trick last summer in not getting a defensive midfielder but we are in January and we have got a massive opportunity to get one and salvage our season. A DM might just be the difference between finishing in the top 4 or outside.

Names we have been linked with this January could very well do a job for us and all come in for reasonable fees. Mohamed Diame, Kevin Strootman, Victor Wanyama and Etienne Capoue, one of these four is exactly what we need, one of these four is what we should be looking at.

Arsene I’m sure knows this but with Diaby back from injury he might be ready to gamble which could be suicidal. Now is the time to go all out in the transfer window, we sit 6th in the league, a new face can raise the mood in our squad and give us that push we so desperately need.
