No more Arshavin / We are on right track

When I think of the likes of Nasri (21), Cesc (21), Vela (19), Wilshere (17), Ramsey (18), Djourou (21) then it is frightening and makes my heart feel warm

ok, ok enough is surely enough. This has gone on long enough now. Yesterday I read several pieces of this transfer being agreed, then being rejected, then close to agreement and now I hear that Zenit are asking for one more million. I have snapped now, so much so that today will be an Arshavin free zone on Arsenal Vision (Starting from now of course)

Arsene Wenger had been speaking about the relationship between William Gallas and Kolo Toure.

“They get on OK,” said Wenger. “In football you don’t have to go on holiday together but you can still play together.

“[Real Madrid legends] Alfredo di Stefano and Ferenc Puskas never spoke to each other. They didn’t greet each other but when you saw them play together you would never guess that.

“Kolo and William talk to each other but it is always very difficult to assess how much people are friends or not. What is essential is that, on the pitch, football is most important and they should respect the game. If you want to win, you do what it takes.”

They get on ok? That kind of says it all doesn’t it? Johan Djourou’s performances have pretty much solved the whole Gallas and Toure argument, it is now a case of who plays alongside him which is pretty good going for a young player who started off almost bottom of Arsene’s pecking order.

We all remember the Sheringham and Andy Cole partnership at Manchester United so we know that they do not have to get on for it to work but it cannot be great for squad moral. When two people do not get on in a group situation it always makes things slightly uncomfortable. Wenger is big on team moral and I am sure he will address the problem one way or the other in the summer.

What will be interesting to see is if Wenger brings back Gallas for the game tomorrow, and more importantly Everton away.

Our manager was also speaking about his confidence that trophies will start coming to the club

“The interesting thing in football is to work with a balanced budget, within your resources and build a big team,” said Wenger.

“We have gone with a different policy to many clubs but we have a balanced budget, we are in a strong position financially, and we have a strong team that is very very young but with quality.

“The interesting thing in football is to work with a balanced budget” That sounded like a little bit of a dig from Wenger.

He certainly is correct though, the way we run the club should be the only way you are able to run a club. I don’t know how clubs can continue to get away with spending more than they earn and getting the club filled with debt.

What I find even more annoying is that you run a club poorly, get them stacked up with debt so much that you have to sell the club. More often than not a billionaire will come in and buy the club and now this club that had been pretty much abused is now looked at as a club with massive ambitions and is now the new cool thing on the block.

It would be great to see all clubs working within their means, managers would be shown up for who they actually where and not for what size cheque book they owned. *ahem* Rafa Benitez *ahem*

Wenger went on to talk about the potential to win trophies.

“When you don’t win trophies it gets harder to resist the media and fans’ demands – of course you have to win trophies. But you must have perspective and the real quality is in the Premier League and Champions League. People forget how young we are.

“We have more and more players who are only 20 or 21 who have already beaten Manchester United and Chelsea and have already handled Premier League games whereas other haven’t kicked a ball in the Premier League.

“Don’t forget that you become really mature at 23 at that level so they will be ahead of that. That’s why I believe that we have to show now that we have the mental quality to win trophies and the mental quality required is consistency.”

This is why I have so much faith in this squad and set up. It might not be perfect right now. Some fans can handle that (although the disappointment is no less) other fans want immediate success. They are still connected to the unbeaten team which were playing at their prime, they were expected to win things every season. This is a new team, a new squad. If they were all 28-32 years old then I could well be throwing my toys out the pram also, I could be suggesting that we need 4-6 new players but it doesn’t work like that with young players.

Pick a world class player, past or present. Then think of where he was or what he was doing at 18-21 and you will notice that they were nothing like how they are. Even someone like Messi who is as natural talent as you can find was behind Guily for Barcelona. He was showing glimpse of class but nothing like the machine that beats 4 players at a time game after game.

When I think of the likes of Nasri (21), Cesc (21), Vela (19), Wilshere (17), Ramsey (18), Djourou (21) then it is frightening and makes my heart feel warm. That is not to mention the even younger players behind them in the reserves who are all improving day by day.

Wenger is working hard at addressing the balance of the future and the present of the squad and we were remarkably close to pulling that off last season, things haven’t quite worked out the same this time round but if we have been awful and are only 6 points behind the leaders then wow! we must have an amazing squad.

Right, I better stop before I start talking about Russians, not that there is anything wrong with Russians but I think you know what I mean.

Have a good day. Drop your view in the comments.

Until tomorrow.
