Afternoon all. Squid Boy here filling in for Mean Lean.
Fair amount of news about our keepers these last few days. Mad Jens is unhappy about not playing more recently, no surprise there. Whilst at the opposite end of the spectrum, Wookash Fabianski is content to bide his time and play the waiting game. The question is…if our threadbare title challenge peters out before the end of the season, would you give the Krazy Kraut a run in the team as his last hurrah? Or would you blood the Pole to give him some game-time?
Of course this is all assuming that our title hopes do indeed evaporate prior to the season’s end. For it not to do so, a win this weekend at Old Trafford is imperative. With the news that the Flamster will miss the game (plus the next few weeks) and that Sagna (best right-back in the world) has not yet recovered, I have to say I am filled with a certain amount of dread going into the match. United’s big boys are well rested and they smell blood. If we concede early, it may well be a case of damage limitation. Sorry about the negativity folks, but the way things are going these days I can’t help but envisage defeat. Not only are our players cream-crackered physically, but the Anfield defeat must have knocked the stuffing out of them mentally. And even if we do get a decent foothold in the match, the b!tch that is Lady Luck will probably ruin it for us anyway.
As for the team, Ade is in dire need of a rest. I’m just thankful he’ll get a prolonged one over the summer unlike the boys going to the Euros. With the Flamster out, Le Boss can either put Gilberto straight in (which is the likely option), give Song a run, or even put Kolo there. If he really believes we can still win the league, then he will not experiment and will plump for the Brazilian. I would love to see Theo start. Right-wing, left-wing, up-front, I don’t care. Just put him on the pitch and see what he can do. Let’s just hope that his wonderful assist on Tuesday has not sent expectations unfeasibly through the roof. And if he does start, hopefully that cunt Neville doesn’t do a ‘Reyes job’ on him.
Speaking of Theo, Signor Capello has been gushing in his praise for the boy’s slaloming run. Shame he left the ground two minutes before. Word is that Theo will definitely feature in the post-season friendly against the Yanks, be it from the start or off the bench. On a personal note, this will be good for me for two reasons: 1) I can finally whip out my ‘Walcott 23’ England shirt and wear it with pride; and 2) For once I will not fall asleep watching England play.
Finally, I was reading the Telegraph today and it had a piece on the three remaining English teams in the Champions League. The article compared their previously successful European sides to their current teams. The fact that we weren’t one of the teams under review made for very difficult reading indeed. That’s two successive years now that three English outfits have made the semis and we aren’t one of them. Last season, fair enough, we were pretty toothless. But the way we have performed this season makes it very hard to digest that we are not being mentioned in the same echelon as our rivals.
Which got me thinking, who do you want to see victorious in this season’s tournament? I said in the match review that I desperately wanted Thierry to go on and lift the trophy now. Do you Gooners agree? Or are you still bitter at the way they mugged us in 2006? Would you pick the Scousers because they are the lesser of the evils? Or would a Liverpool victory leave you feeling depressed at what might have been? Maybe Chelsea for some London solidarity? Or the Mancs because the sentimentalist in you thinks it would be fitting for them to win it 50 years after Munich?
My order of preference would be:
1.Barca
2.Scousers
3.Mancs
4.Chavs

Right that’s enough from me. Keep it red and white, Gooners.
Until tomorrow.
