Suarez is not going to be enough as stated above. Rosicky and Cazorla are some of the best midfield players in the middle of the pitch. They know when to beat their man, when to play it first time. Their first touches are to die for but neither at the edge of the penalty area are as good as the rest of their game, Santi to a lesser extent perhaps.
So the Emirates cup is over with, a draw and a defeat isn’t ideal preparation but we mustn’t forget that friendly matches are for fitness purposes for the most part. It would have been nice mentally for our unbeaten run to have continued through to the season but when it comes to kick off against Aston Villa, I shouldn’t imagine that defeat with a mixed team would matter a massive amount.
It is difficult to make any true assessments during pre season as we have yet to play our strongest first team together yet but from what I’ve seen we look pretty much how I viewed us from last season, especially second half of last season. A team of good passers who understand their game and their team mates game, work hard, understand the patterns that Arsene has drilled into them but who still lack the killer instinct. Not just in terms of finishing but a chance creator. A fully developed Zelalem if you like. We saw the benefit of those two jigsaw pieces when Sneijder and Drogba came on in the second half and the Galatasaray second goal.
While there is talk about several positions such as goalkeeper, center back, deep midfielder, I would be very surprised of the creative midfield and striker positions were not the priority, not just priority but big money spent on those two areas. I don’t think you have to start paying silly money like £23m for Fellaini to find a player who can make interceptions, make blocks, receive the ball off the back four and distribute the ball well.
I think Luis Suarez will be one of those players and I shall come to that in a moment. I do want to talk about the current perception that a number of Arsenal players are coming out speaking trying to urge the manager to spend money. I disagree with the notion that Arsenal players are lining up to twist the managers arm.
Firstly, these are not comments made whilst on international breaks to foreign press. The Arsenal PR team will be fully aware of what is coming out by our players and if Wenger, Gazidis wanted this stopped then this would have been done the first time a player spoke of the excitement of wanting new signings. Especially vice captain Mikel Arteta who is essentially Arsene Wenger’s voice on the pitch these days.
This is how I see it which is nothing more than guess work but here goes. The Arsenal management or indeed just the Arsenal manager feel it is in our best interests to do business later rather than earlier. Maybe prices will be too high to get all our targets if we do it early, maybe other teams will come in and ‘gazump’ us if we go early, instead waiting for other teams fill their squads before making our moves under the radar. I don’t know the reasons but I am pretty sure there is a reason for our lack of activity thus far.
Arsene Wenger keeps stressing that there is a month to go and I think that should tell you all you need to know about his plans.
So now onto Luis Suarez. I wrote this piece a few weeks ago http://www.arsenalvision.co.uk/my-vision/4333-will-current-suarez-bid-be-enough-a-magic-cazorla-returns.html about why I think we would not go above £40m and a quid and I think it is starting to make more and more sense. Judging by Liverpool’s public nattering if kinda makes sense to me.
Currently Arsenal are not in the Champions League, so Liverpool do not have to sell their player to us. They do not have to speak publicly about the terms of Suarez’s contract.
I am sure they were hoping that Real Madrid would come calling and make a move but as things stand, Real have their hearts set on a monkey boy who is a big monkey in a tiny little tree *bless them*
Maybe time is against them, maybe Ian Ayre and Brendan Rodgers wake up every morning and glance at the calendar and see the big dark circle ringed around August 20th/21st. The date of Arsenal’s Champions League qualifier and the two legs that could, hopefully confirm Arsenal as a Champions League group stage team for season 2013/14 which would automatically allow Luis Suarez to walk out of Liverpool to the Arsenal with £40m plus £1 going straight into the Liverpool bank account.
I don’t believe that this clause has only recently come to light for Arsenal, I suspect that this was the case before we launched our first £30m bid or whatever it was. As Real Madrid decided to raise the price on Higuain, perhaps Arsene Wenger thought hold on a second but if we are going to pay that amount of money for an exceptional finisher but in truth not a great deal more, why not get a Premier League ready, quicker, harder working, player who will be more fluid in our style of play. While I dislike the man and will not change that stance even if he signs for us, I have not read one piece that goes into detail explaining that Higuain is the better fit on the pitch.
What is the betting that Liverpool’s management team have been on the blower to all sorts of clubs around the world offering their striker. They don’t want Arsenal to get him because they know that 4th is their trophy and they think that Arsenal are the team that stand in the way.
So I do not see Arsenal moving on the bid that is on the table and it is why Arsene has said that we do not want to pay more than we need to on players. All this talk from Liverpool and the media that Arsenal have lacked class is a joke and a not very funny one at that.
Having read some articles from some journos you would have thought that we offered just the £1 coin to Liverpool for the player. Everyone seems to have forgotten the £40m bid that goes along with that. Excuse me if I am wrong but if he moved to Arsenal wouldn’t he be the second highest transfer in Premier League history between two PL clubs? Like I say, correct me if I am wrong.
In fact I am getting pretty fed up with so many jumping on high horses. The written press couldn’t bloody wait for Cesc to head back to Barcelona, they were jumping for joy at the number of players leaving us to fulfil their ambition. But now the shoe is on the other foot, you’ve got toys flying through the air.
This is coming from Arsene Wenger who is supposed to be tight with money and does not want to spend. Nothing to do with the new commercial deals obviously, that is pure coincidence but I don’t want to go down that road before I get cash reserves thrown at me. That is another argument, one that I may have at a later date.
But Suarez is not going to be enough as stated above. Rosicky and Cazorla are some of the best midfield players in the middle of the pitch. They know when to beat their man, when to play it first time. Their first touches are to die for but neither at the edge of the penalty area are as good as the rest of their game, Santi to a lesser extent perhaps.
We’ve matched possession against pretty much everyone, we conceded the second least goals last season but when games have been tight and we’ve started well, we haven’t always turned that into goals. By the end of the window at the latest, I hope we will be able to create and score against anyone in European football. Well that is the hope.
Over to you Arsene, Ivan and Dick.
