The first team have plenty of potential signings and will do pretty much every season for the next few years at least. These are internal signings. The young players are growing and improving and we saw a sneaky preview at Barnet that many of the younger lads are pushing on the door
During the most part the year we are treated to transfer rumour after transfer rumour, even during the periods when the window is firmly sealed shut. In mid July, this is the time when rumours can quite possibly be reality. Managers are constructing their squads for the pre season, a time when preparation is so important.
You get the feeling that Arsene hasn’t yet finished his work in the transfer market. Both with players coming in to the club and a few faces may have played their last games for the club.
There was a rumour doing the rounds on twitter that Eduardo could be moving to Shakhtar Donetsk for £6 million. With Wenger’s recent positive comments about the striker I would usually ignore such rumour but the fact that he missed our opening pre season clash at Barnet makes me lean towards the player heading towards the exit door, especially with the addition of Chamakh in the Gunners squad. I actually think that Eduardo and Chamakh could make a successful partnership but with our 4-3-3 formation along with a certain Robin Van Persie, I think that his future could well be elsewhere.
One supposed Arsenal target Joe Cole is looking very likely to be heading to Anfield. Many were told that he was heading to Arsenal (including myself) but as we know, things can change fast in football. I heard that our interest in Cole depended on players leaving the club so as we haven’t sold any players yet, our hand was always going to be weaker.
Manuel Almunia was also missing from Barnet and with Peter Hill-Wood admitting to our earlier interest in Fulham’s number 1, I am going to allow myself to believe that Arsene is also interested in bringing in another goalkeeper before we face Joe Cole’s Liverpool on the first league game of the season.
The first team have plenty of potential signings and will do pretty much every season for the next few years at least. These are internal signings. The young players are growing and improving and we saw a sneaky preview at Barnet that many of the younger lads are pushing on the door. When Jack Wilshere, Jay Emmanuel-Thomas, Kieran Gibbs, Craig Eastmond etc reach their peak then it would be difficult to find external players who could give more to the squad than our current crop.
There seems to be plenty of noise regarding Everton’s Phil Jagielka which would be very surprising considering the price of Premier League players, especially at a club like Everton who are trying to take the next step. To be honest I do not know how good he is, what strengths he would bring to the club but a player who has played in the Premier League and can deal with crosses and remain consistent would be a big bonus to the squad. This is only rumour at the moment but it won’t be long until we can sort out the rubbish from the truth.
Back tomorrow.
