Ever get the feeling that lady luck is just toying with you? Talk about good and bad luck counteracting itself.

Due to our current defensive injuries, Wenger started Gibbs at left back and Johan Djourou at center back. Adebayor was rested, along with Nasri and Robin Van Persie. Nicklas Bendtner took over the role as lone front man with Cesc floating behind him.

Wigan started the brighter, they took the game to us as Villarreal had done in midweek, perhaps the midweek game took a lot out of us physically but we couldn’t get near them. Passes were going astray, moves were breaking down in the Wigan half, we just couldn’t get ourselves going.

Wigan struck first half way through the first half. A corner was swung into the Arsenal penalty area, Djourou headed across the area to Mido who half volleyed the ball into the ground towards Fabianski who could only palm the ball into the Arsenal net. On second glance Fabianski should feel like he could have done better with the shot.

Gibbs picked out Bendtner with a left sided cross that the Dane headed over the bar, Gibbs cross was a little too high but his final ball has massive potential.

Defensively Gibbs was having a tricky afternoon against the quick feet and speed of Valencia. Experience is key when it comes to a converted player and it will come for Gibbs as it did with Ashley Cole who was also converted to left back.

Our horrific defensive injuries continued when Djourou fell to the ground unchallenged following a corner. He sat on the floor clutching his knee. The fact that he had to go off on a stretcher does not bode well for the upcoming games. I would be surprised to see Djourou play again this season.

Djourou was replaced by the experience of Mikael Silvestre who could now prove to be a crucial signing if he can perform to his best. We also know that Silvestre hasn’t played consistently for a long while so we will have to hope that he can hit the ground running.

Late into stoppage time in the first half came the turning point of the game. Gibbs attempted to head the ball back to Fabianski but didn’t get enough purchase on his header, Valencia seized on the mistake and raced ahead of the youngster, Gibbs pulled and tugged Valencia to the floor with Silvestre chasing behind them. There was only one card I was expecting and it wasn’t the yellow that Alan Wiley produced. We could have lost yet another defender for the run in but the loss of Djourou was balanced out by a bad refereeing decision. I say bad but it was clearly a great decision by the referee. Luck is on our side at last.

Lady luck clearly wanted to prove a point when Ben Watson’s free kick cannoned against the base of the post and out to safety.

By half time Chris Kirkland hadn’t been tested, the midfield could not get support around Bendtner and Wigan were continuing to cause Arsenal problems, it needed a big response from Wenger at half time, something had to change otherwise we would have walked out of the JJB with nil poi.

Silvestre should have dealt with a long ball over the top in the 54th minute, but he let it bounce and expected Fabianski to race out of his goal to claim the ball when he was nowhere near the ball. Silvestre’s indecisiveness prompted the Pole to race out of his area, Mido nipped in and got a head to the ball, unfortunately for him Fabianski nipped in and got a body on Mido’s face. Mido’s header was rolling towards an empty net but luckily Gibbs was on the pitch and at hand to clear off the line.

Lucky Arsenal, but not lucky Mido who had blood pouring from his face. His face wound was enough to see Mido hobble off the pitch and replaced by Oliver Kapo.

The next goal was vital and on the hour mark Arsenal got the all important equaliser. Bendtner won a long ball in the air which found the feet of Walcott which deflected to Arshavin in the box, he turned and wanted to get a shot away but lost his footing. Arshavin whilst on the floor at the presence of mind to nudge the ball onto Walcott who outside of the foot finished extremely well. 1-1.

From that point I knew we could take the game. With the wind in our sails and players like Nasri, Adebayor and Van Persie on the bench the game was only going to go one way.

Wenger showed his intent by replacing Denilson for Van Persie minutes after the goal. Denilson wasn’t at his best, he couldn’t stamp his authority on the game which isn’t a surprise giving the fact that he has had the most amount of minutes on the pitch so far this campaign.

Emmanuel Adebayor replaced Theo Walcott on the 67th minute, I am sure if Bendtner had played the same amount of minutes as Theo in recent weeks, he would have been taken off. Bendtner looked rusty after being out of action for a couple of weeks.

The turnaround was complete on the 71st minute, lovely link up with Cesc and Arshavin, something I am sure we will be seeing much more of. Cesc played it to Arshavin and made a run in the box, Arshavin played it through Melchiot’s legs into Cesc’s path. Cesc looked up and slid it across the box to Silvestre who was for some strange reason in the right place to tap in from 6 yards.

Arsenal could now play on the counter attack and pick off Wigan. Arshavin drilled a shot off the post, the rebound was put in by Van Persie but he was flagged for offside.

Adebayor made a huge difference when he came on, he has been doing this ever since his injury.

Alex Song was fantastic throughout the second half and was a big part of why Arsenal wrestled the momentum from Wigan. What is so apparent is his vast improvement on the ball. Many times during the half he would turn a player before finding the pass. Not only is he defensively strong he is contributing to our attacks.

The third on the 90th was Arsenal of previous years. Arsenal broke from a Wigan attack, Adebayor tried to play a pass into the path of Cesc but got the weight of his pass wrong, Koumas who tracked back tried to pass it square to his defender but Arshavin nipped in front of the defender and first time struck low past Kirkland 3-1 game over. One minute Arshavin wasn’t in shot the next he was running away with his finger on his lips.

The best was saved till last, Alex Song who had been breathtaking in the second 45 minutes picked up the ball and ran past two Wigan players and fired low into the corner of the net for the fourth.

It was no less than Alex Song deserved. If Arsene Wenger does revert back to a long term 4-4-2 then Song will be high on the managers thoughts.

It is amazing how a game can change so drastically, we were not in the races during the first half, Wigan should have scored at least another goal in that first half period. Earlier in the season we would have lost that game, no doubt about it, today we know this team can turn it around even when they are not playing very well.

We will have to start our first half on Wednesday as we did in the second half yesterday. Villarreal may not be as forgiving as Wigan were.

Top gun goes to sir Alex Song, for me he is the most improved player of the season and showed he has everything in his locker, including marauding runs and finishes.

Aston Villa face Everton today in a bid to claw back some points on Arsenal, maybe we should be concentrating on Chelsea 6 points ahead of us instead of Villa 6 points behind us.
