It will be interesting to see how the central defence unfolds in the next few months. Koscielny and Squillaci are almost in the same boat. Coming to Arsenal, having to work with new players and settling into English football for the first time
It looks as if the puzzle has almost been completed. One of the last two pieces were put in place last night after Sevilla announce on their official website that Sébastien Squillaci is heading to London to go through a medical as the two clubs have agreed a fee. That fee seems to be in the region of £5 million or so.
This news comes just days after Wenger admitting that Arsenal were ‘far away from being close to signing him’
I know very little about the guy, in fact I know as much as I have read over the last few days. 30 years of age, 6ft 1, has played for France on twenty occasions and is an uncompromising defender.
Tick, tick, tick and tick. The boxes all seemed to be ticked and he looks like the type of signing that we need. But we cannot make any judgements until he actually plays some games for us and forges a partnership with whichever defender he plays alongside. It will be interesting to see how the central defence unfolds in the next few months. Koscielny and Squillaci are almost in the same boat. Coming to Arsenal, having to work with new players and settling into English football for the first time.
Koscielny has made an impressive start to his Arsenal career and has had the benefit of pre season with his new team mates. Squillaci on the other hand has 6 years more experience than Koscielny and has Champions league experience under his belt. Will Arsene go for the experienced senior figure or will he continue with Koscielny and Djourou.
With Song and Nordtveit as fifth and sixth choice for two positions, you would expect and hope that we can all put the ‘central defensive crisis’ to bed once and for all.
I think Schwarzer could be Wenger’s missing piece and if we do not manage to prize him away from Fulham then I doubt that we have any other goalkeepers lined up. Schwarzer is still ‘injured’ and missed Fulham’s 2-2 draw with Manchester United at Craven Cottage.
That could of course be complete tosh and we could have several other candidates on the list. If a deal is agreed then I expect it to be done right at the end of the transfer window. Who knows, we might even be given a Diarra, Denilson type surprise. Those players came in under the radar at the last moment so it is possible that another similar move could happen before the window closes.
Plenty of talk has been about Theo Walcott after his blistering performance against the seasiders over the weekend.
Walcott has had people looking for creative ways to discredit him but now he has given his own views on his form and route to success.
Walcott said:
“I am 21, so I want to play games every week now, it is a big season for me. I have been very unlucky with injuries last season and I am looking out for myself a bit more now. I am one of the last to leave now, always staying behind after training, practising things; crosses and set-pieces. It is down to me, so I will look after myself and am raring to go now.”
Ahhh, so that is where the set pieces have come from. Theo’s obvious hard work looks like it is paying off. It is still very early, Theo will have to do that over a period of time and against stronger opposition but he is still only 21 and the improvement since last season is evident.
Wenger has spoken once more about Theo’s potential as a central striker, Wenger believes that he could end up in that position in the future. I cannot see it happening for a while yet though. You want Theo running towards the opposition and not standing with his back to goal, trying to hold the ball and bring others into play. Marking Theo from his wide forward position is much more difficult for defenders. He has more space to run into from a wider position.
Theo can stick to where he is at the moment as we have several quality center forwards to rotate in that position as it is. The same goes for Carlos Vela at this moment, he looks like a left attacking spot will be partly his this season.
I was going to have a pop at Alan Hansen for his ridiculous comments on Match of the day but what is the point? Even Gary Lineker looked embarrassed by Hansen’s waffle. Absolutely no point really.
Before I go I would like to congratulate our younger Gooners for their 3-1 victory against Shamrock Rovers. JET, Lansbury and Randall scored the goals. Good stuff kids, keep it up.
Back again tomorrow.
