Cesc would have a field day I thought. £23m or whatever it was, looked a very good investment. Last season he was up there in the race for player of the year, in a team that were largely pants all season, that takes some doing but while football is football, we are the Arsenal. I don’t want to sound like I am jumping on the moral bandwagon here and I probably am but Luis Suarez is a despicable human being. Yes he dives a ridiculous amount and while it is more than our players in the past have done, we have still had a few like Emmanuel Eboue who would go down a little too easy at times. You can deal with that maybe, if you turn a blind eye. He leaves his studs in on the opposition a little too often also but we could dress that up as he is a fighter and wants to win. I mean we’ve had players in the past who uncompromising at the best of times. But here it is, if I call Suarez a racist I will get people jumping to his
The new away kit was officially revealed yesterday outside the stadium, being modeled by Arsenal’s young Brits and like most, I really like the look of it. As I said on Twitter and yes, I know before writing this that it sounds ludicrous but the kit looks like a kit of good exciting football. Don’t make me explain what I am trying to articulate but it is just what it is. The kit screams at me, quick exchange and speedy break away.
In truth, I am not as hung up on the look of our kit as many people are, I do understand the appeal but generally even if it isn’t a kit that aesthetically pleasing, I tend to forget about it quite quickly but that is just a personal thing. That said, I do like what we have for the coming season, I do not actually own an away kit, having thought about that further I have never owned an away kit but many, many home shirts over the years so I may just have to swoop and lodge a bid to poach the latest talent in the Arsenal shop.
I am really looking forward to the start of the season against Villa. Arsenal are odds-on to win their first Premier League game of the season and that will increase further if we buy some added quality.
Which brings me nicely to everybody’s favourite topic.
I have been slack with blog writing over the last few weeks so I haven’t covered much in the way of, well, transfer rumours.
Many Gooners are frantically biting their nails because we have yet to tie up a big transfer. Almost as if transfers have to be sorted before we fly out or nothing will happen. Don’t get me wrong, it would have been advantageous for us to have secured Higuain and co before we went on tour, because it would have been good for bonding and a commercial bonus especially with the new shirts on sale now. This could still happen of course if things move quickly but it is not the be all and end all. If you remember a certain Santi Cazorla was not bought before last season’s tour of Asia and I reckon things turned out ok there.
There is a warped perception that the club are just flicking through the yellow pages for a new striker then putting it down without making any calls instead using the time to mow the lawn or do some DIY in the house with only minutes remaining of the window. If I was to guess, I would assume that plenty of the work has gone on already, players have been identified and approaches have been made. Arsenal would be aware of the players desires to come to our club or not and ballpark figures would already be known. This idea that we have money so we shouldn’t have to negotiate is laughable. It is not reality and even richer clubs with far greater resources negotiate. Like it or not, this is business, it always has been.
If Real Madrid slapped a £50m price tag on Higuain who wanted to join us, should we just go and pay it even though it was totally unreasonable? No of course not and I know that is an exaggerated example but the point remains.
There will be plenty of dancing between clubs until both sides feel they are getting a good deal, rarely does it work out any other way. As long as new players are signed before the window closes and ideally get a few weeks and pre season when it gets real not the making cash pre season then I am happy.
So what of the reported targets? Luis Suarez?
Well there is a divide on this one and before I start, I just want to clarify that I just do not see this happening for a number of reasons that you already know, even those who want him know the long list of reasons why it is so unlikely to happen.
During his first few months at Liverpool I was envious and wrote about it a few times. I watched Liverpool absolutely destroy Fulham at Craven Cottage a few years back when King ‘spend a lot’ Kenny was in charge and I was in awe of Suarez’s movement and ability, especially the former.
How I wished we had someone with that movement, our creative players like Cesc would have a field day I thought.
I mean we’ve had players in the past who were uncompromising at the best of times. But here it is, if I call Suarez a racist I will get people jumping to his defence stating that the one word he said is translated differently in South America. It means I love you buddy or something.
But what seems to be lost is the rest of the conversation that I believe was lip read and you can find the transcript somewhere (sorry I am writing this on the train without internet connection)
Didn’t he say that he didn’t want to touch Evra or talk to him because he was black? I may not be factually correct with that so don’t quote me but it was along those lines. Does that get ignored because he didn’t use a certain word? Sorry but no thanks.
I want us to win trophies but honestly, I would rather I liked the players we had. I know many are going to disagree and that is down to you. We take Arsenal for what we want, there is no one way to support a team but that is kinda important to me.
To the Liverpool fans who might pick this up in their news feeds, yes I know he isn’t coming here anyway so we can all high five and stuff. Top player but a guy that is disliked by many outside of Liverpool.
However I do believe that Luis Suarez is important to Arsenal and our short term future. I believe that his proposed move to Real Madrid is part of a triangle thing (for want of a better word) which would then #FreeHiguain to join us. Which move is done first is anyone’s guess because Higuain leaving could free up cash to buy Suarez but the Real fans will kick up a stink so perhaps they would rather buy Suarez first to calm their fans down (don’t we know about that) before selling Higuain.
It reminds me of the Alonso to Arsenal story back then. A blogger started waffling on about how Arsenal could have bought Alonso but did not want to pay 67 pence more or something. This has been taken as gospel, well these things are when they denigrate the club. Without having any inside track, this version makes a little more sense to me and it goes a little like this.
Rafa Benitez being a little loopy wanted to sign Gareth Barry from Aston Villa because he wanted to replace Xavi Alonso. Aston Villa had their valuation and stuck to it, the press had also linked us to Barry but the player we wanted was Alonso. Liverpool and Villa did not agree on a fee so Barry did not move. Why would Liverpool then go and sell us Alonso? How does this logically make sense? We didn’t get the player we wanted because the chain reaction before hand had broken down.
Transfers are often dependant on replacements. Clubs will hold onto a player until they have sourced a replacement and only once that is completed is the player allowed to leave. Unless you are Man City, Chelsea and PSG where the selling club is compensated with a transfer fee almost doubled so they can have their new shiny present now and not on Christmas day.
So we are back here with Gareth Barry. Can’t we have Alonso again instead? Rumours are of a genuine interest in the player but genuinely I’d rather not. Not that it is down to me or anything but I hope this is some more club posturing to alert other clubs rather than actual interest in this player.
As much as we need that sort of player especially with Le Coq departing on loan *sniff sniff* I am more excited that we are interested or even in talks with a number 10 type of player. I love a good old fashioned playmaker I must say. Someone who creates goals along with Santi with the movement and finishing of Higuain up top along with that delicious away shirt? ooh you’ve got me all excited now.
And with that, I am off. I am hoping to get back on the blogwagon again properly. I have been lazy, busy and there hasn’t been much to write about but I am hoping to write more frequently. Not that I’ve been missed mind but you know, it’s more for my sanity. Cleanses the soul and all that. Or not.
Drop your thoughts in the comments, always nice to know that I’ve been listened to rather than just talking to myself. Have yourself a great day, especially if you are enjoying lovely weather like it is over here.
