If I could virtually kick Matthew Taylor square where it hurts most, I think I would give it a pretty good go. Not only because he has been somewhat of a mouthy idiot against us in the past but because last night when the score was 2-1 to West Ham, Joe Cole had slipped him clean through and instead of finishing he hit the advancing Lloris, moments later that lot went down the other end and scored, amazingly it was not a goal from Gareth Bale. The only goal in their last 8 that he hadn’t scored, quite an incredible statistic I must say.
Needless to say it was he who banged in what was reluctantly a wonderful late winner. I was clinging onto hope that the Hammers would take some points off Tottenham before the London derby next week but it wasn’t to be.
While the Gareth Bale hype has been sailing way over board, there is no doubting that he is a player in the zone. It reminds me of my younger years where a few alcoholic beverages would make you feel like Danny (invincible) *sorry* even if you really weren’t.
We had the same last season for the most part with that Dutch guy, and in truth we have had the same for many years but just with different personnel. From Thierry Henry to Cesc Fabregas and finally Robin van Persie. Arsene has attempted to move away from that now and make the team a more balanced one rather than relying on an individual just as Tottenham are doing at present.
I think both have their advantages and disadvantages, the obvious advantages of a one man band are that a player in that form is capable of winning games for you when it seems unlikely. Gareth Bale apart, Tottenham offered very little threat to West Ham over the course of 90 minutes and that has been the case on many such occasions this season. The negative side to a one man show is that players like money hungry Emmanuel Adebayor do not take responsibility to step up and win games. And when player of the moment is having an off day, the rest of the team are still trying to feed that one player.
In our side we have shared the goals around between many players and when we are on our game it makes us very difficult to stop. Think of the first half at Sunderland recently and the first half against West Ham, those such games.
There is no obvious way to stop the team from scoring. That is all well and good when the team is purring but when things go wrong as was the case against Blackburn in the FA cup, we do not have a match winner.
We have a lot of attacking quality players but I see them as continuity players, players who make other players into better players. Santi Cazorla is exactly that. More Xavi than Messi and the same to perhaps a lesser extent with Jack Wilshere, although if Wilshere can add regular goals and assists to his game then maybe that can change.
Funnily enough, I think the closest thing we have to a game changer is Gervinho and I don’t need telling that he is way off his game right now to be considered as a first team player.
I suppose it is a tricky balance to find, trying to build a team who have a threat in every area yet have players who can change the game without being overly relied upon. Bayern Munich were a good example of a side who had a great blend. Barcelona’s blend is a little unusual, they have a great team who work for each other but have that one obvious stand out player yet the team manage to play in a way that you cannot stop his impact, no matter how much to try.
Going back to Gareth Bale for a moment and his positioning last night made me a little worried for a second or two. Bale was drifting into the number 10 position in areas that West Ham found it difficult to mark him which resulted in them fouling him while he powered towards goal. Looking at the gap between our defence and midfield, you feel that is an area that must be addressed when the match comes round.
So basically there is absolutely no conclusion or point to this article but I wanted to write about anything other than club finances. I mean there are enough teenage financial experts on twitter and on the blogs so I didn’t want to crowd the room up even further with my superior financial knowledge.
Anyhoo, enjoy your Tuesday.
