The reason why Wenger considers squad to be his best

Taking into account his age and potential to improve. He could well be one of the best players in Arsenal history, at least English player

Yesterday I said that I would write something properly today, what I didn’t bank on is the lack of news, or the lack of substantial news going round. To be honest I am getting a little bit fed up of writing speculation, maybe it is my age (not that I am that old min you)

In my younger days, speculation was almost as exciting as watching page 3. These days although I still have interest in both, it is not quite the same as when you are just into your teens.

One certain signing is that of now 17 year old Jack Wilshere. There was talk of him signing on his birthday (New years day) but it is now official.

The boss seemed to be pleased about the deal.

“We are delighted that Jack has signed a professional contract with us. Jack is a player with great potential, with an ability to find the final ball and also score goals.

“Jack is a passionate and committed young player, he is not afraid of tackles and I am convinced he will have tremendous penetrative power in a few years.

“We have already seen Jack’s qualities in both his first team performances and in training on a regular basis, and we look forward to Jack being an important part of our first team for years to come.”

It is hard to say anymore about him that I haven’t already said previously. It is easy to over hype young players and I try and not do that as many have not lived up to anywhere near their full potential.

However, from what I have seen of this lad, taking into account his age and potential to improve. He could well be one of the best players in Arsenal history, at least English player.

I do not know about his mentality or attitude but from the outside he looks to have it all. He is brave in the tackle, tracks back and is wonderful on the ball.

I hope that he can grow and develop in a successful side. As long as our squad of young players can be kept together then I see no reason why they cannot be a successful team.

This is how I see the current playing situation.

This season I was hoping that we would continue from last season and push on for the title, even with the departures I thought that Nasri would add goals to the great football that Hleb brought. That has been true on the whole but injuries have upset his introduction season. Having Walcott in the side would also bring more goals to this team and Denilson replacing Flamini would be a positive step in terms of keeping the ball which has been true.

We have had problems this season that need to be fixed but what I keep thinking is that this group of players are at the very start of their careers and the only way is up. I think of the invincible team, that great team that we all love and I imagine what they were like at the same stage of their careers.

Let me give you some examples. Alex Song may not be my favourite Arsenal player and he isn’t with many Arsenal supporters but think of Gilberto Silva at 21 years old.

At 21 Gilberto had just joined América Futebol, in three years at the Brazilian club he made 20 appearances in total. This future world cup winner played only 20 matches. Why was that?

Freddie Ljungberg scored many important goals for Arsenal and was an important part of that unbeaten team. In 1995 he had been at Halmstads BK for a season, at the tender age of 19 he was finding his feet in and around the first team. He stayed there for 4 years from 1994-1998 playing 79 games and scoring 10 goals in total.

You would expect more than 80 games in 4 seasons from a player of Freddie Ljungberg’s ability wouldn’t you?

I could use many many examples, such as a young Pires, Vieira and even legends like Henry and Bergkamp.

The truth is, those great players were learning their trade the same way the current crop are. Our current crop have the advantage of playing together already and learning to play the way that our manager what’s them to.

If the invincibles were as good as they are then I am looking forward to watching the end result of Nasri (21), Denilson (20), Cesc (21), Wilshere (17), Ramsey (18), Vela (19) the list goes on.

Arsene Wenger will sort out the short term problems, but the long term looks fantastic.
