Theo Walcott isn’t naturally the most talented player in the squad, far from it. But when his pass completion rate improves and remains consistent, and his dribbling becomes more varied and doesn’t get dispossessed as often then we could witness one of the most effective players in England
It is not difficult to guess where this blog will start today, it should be the first topic on every Arsenal supporters lips. Yes, you’ve guessed it Carlos Vela has been called up for Mexico. What? ok, you’re right, that was indeed irritating and unfunny and I apologise.
Theo Walcott hasn’t been as lucky as his club team mate and has been cut from Fabio Capello’s final squad. It was a bit of surprise as Theo has always seemed to be one of the managers favourites, scoring that fabulous hat trick in Croatia and possessing that blistering pace that would have every left back in world football concerned.
I like Theo Walcott and have defended him from the very start but having said that I can understand Capello’s decision. Theo, on his day can make things happen but unfortunately his day has been all too infrequent. His form when he came back from injury was below par which is totally understandable, many players take a while to get back to speed and eventually he did manage to get back to somewhere near his best. It just wasn’t for a consistent enough period. His recent friendly performances have been mixed bags. A good run and cross followed by miss control or a bad pass.
Theo Walcott has been around a long time now and it is easy to forget his age but lets not forget that fact. He turned 21 three months ago. He is a player still ironing out his flaws, still developing his strengths. Having a final judgement on his ability now would be foolish and would be a mistake that hasn’t been learnt from the past.
Theo Walcott isn’t naturally the most talented player in the squad, far from it. But when his pass completion rate improves and remains consistent, and his dribbling becomes more varied and doesn’t get dispossessed as often then we could witness one of the most effective players in England. A player who will need two players to stop him which in turn gives other players more space to shine.
Personally I think that Aaron Lennon is currently a more rounded and dangerous player than Walcott but I see Theo overtaking him *insert joke about pace somehow* and becoming the far better player in time. How long? who knows, it is down to Walcott to take this blow on the chin, steady himself and get back to London Colney, learning from the likes of Nasri, Van Persie, Arshavin, Rosicky and develop the tools he already possesses.
Rumours are circling around that Theo has ignored Capello’s orders to stay wide, instead opting to come inside and get involved. Firstly I do not know how true this is but if it was the case then the first thing that springs to mind is the way he is probably encouraged to play whilst in the red and white of the greatest club side known to man. The Arsenal.
Perhaps Theo was just playing on instinct, doing what he does every week (when fit of course)
Another point I wanted to make was the apparent lack of acceptance from certain England members. Obviously this is just conjecture on my part but I noticed players like Gerrard, Rooney etc not opting to find him when in space on the right, instead choosing another option. Rooney’s reaction to Walcott against Mexico even though Rooney was the player standing in the offside position was there for all to see. Would he have screwed his face up like that, flicked his hand up and turned his back on the player in such a petulant manner had it have been Stevie G, Lamps or JT? god, I hate those names with a passion. That is why I will be a neutral during this world cup. I am English but how can I support players who I detest?
One team that I will have more than one eye on is the Dutch. Robin Van Persie scored his third in two friendlies after firing a typical unstoppable penalty in a 4-1 victory against Ghana. I love Robin’s penalties, as long as he keeps it below the crossbar, you just know the goalkeeper will get nowhere near it.
They certainly look like an exciting bunch with the likes of Van Persie, Robben, Sneijder and Van Der Vart. Could it be the year for the Orange?
Back to the Arsenal, Aaron Ramsey has been rewarded for his development improvement with a new tasty 6 year contract and rightly so. For some reason signing our players up on long contracts seems to be an issue with some supporters even though the club are taking these steps to avoid another Mathieu Flamini situation, a situation that was complained about by the same people. It’s a strange world.
Anyhow, Ramsey is likely to be a key figure for a number of years for this current side and hopefully the next crop who are coming up. Wilshere, Gibbs, Aneke, Afobe, etc are looking like real special players and they could get me enjoying England once again in the future.
According to Sky Sports, Barcelona have opened formal talks with Arsenal over the transfer of Cesc Fabregas. Yeah they have sent a fax through for £140 quid and that qualifies as official talks. I do not trust Barcelona in the slightest and will wait to hear what Arsenal have got to say when the time is right.
As it is Mean Lean junior’s birthday, I should really cut this short and clean up all the spilt drinks and splatted sandwiches from the floor.
Back again tomorrow.
