You’ve watched and read enough about the match details but I would like to bring up a few points. Walcott’s goal reminded me of Giroud’s goal in Munich. We are at our most dangerous when playing one touch football. Even the best of the best cannot stop us when we are slicing through teams without having to think of the next pass. I wish we would try and attack in that way more often rather than holding onto the ball for too long. The team need to accept that some through passes or combinations

Three days later and I am none the wiser whether the 1-1 draw was something I should stick on my shelf and nod proudly or shake my head with disappointment. I guess if we end up finishing in third place then this game will be pretty irrelevant, although it could well have been the catalyst that pushed us towards three straight victories.
I have been very content that we were previously playing below our best yet managing to pick up wins. As we are continuously told when it is others involved, it is what makes champions. But I underneath the nervy punched air I was a little concerned, concerned because I know that Arsene Wenger’s teams historically thrive on performances rather than results. Victories and indeed previous success has been a consequence of Wengerball.
While the despicable Patrice Evra looked down his nose at us once more post match, it is difficult to disagree with his view that it was nice to see an aggressive Arsenal team against Manchester United. The match at Old Trafford earlier in the season was quite the opposite. That Arsenal team were still attempting to join the dots together and our work off the ball was just as disjointed as our passing on the day.
In the first half on Sunday we flew out the traps like a team on a mission. The respect was left in the guard of honour but once the whistle blew we played like a focused hungry team who fought for victory.
The team need to accept that some through passes or combinations will not come off but surely it is a better option than Sagna crossing the ball into the box.
Sagna’s misplaced pass was bad but I thought his foul was awful. Since then, I have heard that he actually won the ball. I am yet to see the reverse camera angle. I am not surprised that he would have won that ball. He is a very clean tackler and experienced right back who knows van Persie’s movements more than most. I am also not at all surprised that the other angle was not shown on television.
I understand the calls for Jenkinson and to be fair, I didn’t think he should have been dropped at the start of the season when Sagna returned but let’s be honest, had Jenkinson made that same mistake (Swansea at home) then the same people would be going mad at the manager for not choosing the more experienced player in such a big game. I am sure Jenkinson knows that he is the future and his chance could well be next season but in a run in that needs wise heads, I totally understand the decision to select a man who has been there and done it. Mistake apart he played well and wouldn’t have been questioned had he played a proper pass to Mertesacker.
Everyone in the stadium, including Szczesny knew exactly where that blokes penalty was going to go. We have witnessed it enough at the Emirates, the trouble is you just cannot stop it from going in. This piece will no longer talk about Manchester United players, I am no longer interested.
I am so pleased for Aaron Ramsey right now, I admire the guy more than most at present. A young player who was in the middle of making a huge step up from Championship football had to endure a horrible leg break and then try and continue developing whilst getting over such a bad injury. Some of the criticism was utterly ridiculous yet unfortunately not too surprising these days. He was as good as anyone on the pitch against the current champions. He would have been even better had he selected Theo Walcott’s run instead of Lukas Podolski when we were 1-0 up.
It felt like unfinished business when Mathieu Flamini left for Milan, I think we are developing a new and improved version. He is stronger and better defensively. His improvement has also unlocked the shackles on Mikel Arteta. Ramsey’s spells playing as the deepest midfielder and also wide has improved his game and Arsene deserves credit for that.
Are we surprised that Laurent Koscielny kept Robin van Persie quiet for large periods? I’m certainly not. If there is a better one on one defender in the league then I’ve missed him. For me, it has always been Koscielny +1 whether that be Mertesacker, Vermaelen or a n ew centre back. Per alongside him was also fantastic on the day. I am enjoying that partnership and expect them to get better with games.
Many people were strangely cheering the Giroud suspension after the Fulham game, assuming that Lukas Podolski would set the world alight as central striker, as if the manager has not seen his players hundreds of times in training. Podolski was given his second start in that role and while his link up play was better than it was against Sunderland on the opening day of the season, the trouble was his movement was not good enough and didn’t make enough runs for the likes of Rosicky and Cazorla. Unfortunately playing as centre forward takes more than just finishing off chances, it takes much more than that especially in an interchanging one touch system like our side.
I hope he improves and gets more goalscoring chances in our last three games but at this point I am unconvinced that he can play that 9.5 position that is so vital for our 4-2-3-1. I’d happily munch on these words come the end of the season. For all his indecisiveness in the final third, I think Gervinho is our best option. And before you say it, yes we should certainly have a better second option.
Our next three games are winnable, especially if we go into every game with the same intensity we showed in that first half against Manchester United. The difference is that you cannot chase after players and press high up if you are in possession of the ball and in most of the games I expect the opposition to do what United did in the second half. Sit deep and look to catch us on the break.
Three wins are the aim, we can only afford a draw in one game if Tottenham fail to beat Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. I do not expect Tottenham to slip up in any of their other fixtures so we have to do our part, starting at Lofus road on the weekend.
