It is déjà vu time as Gooners rapidly hit the F5 key expecting a more exciting headline than the one that is staring back at them.
Even though we all knew about the signing of Yaya Sanogo months ago, when he was officially unveiled on Arsenal.com a number of Gooners went into mini meltdown. A guy on twitter told me that Wenger was at it again and that he would only sign another French young player before the window closed. I am still not sure what this was based on, oh I remember it was because the window had been opened for the whole day and we hadn’t made any major signings. This I remind you was on July 1st, the opening of the window.
Arsenal doing a deal is not just dependant on Arsenal FC yet it seems that any hold ups are down to our club and nobody else. Many are quick to the point the finger at clubs that have done deals but conveniently forget to do so at big clubs who are yet to acquire new players so far.
We have proven over the years that when a deal can be done quickly then it usually is. Think of Eduardo, Rosicky, Koscielny and Podolski off the top of my head.
I have written my theories as to why we have had to wait until the end of the window in previous windows, I don’t think this will be the case this season. Well at least not for most of our targets.
This time of year is notoriously busy for football clubs, you are living in dreamland if you think that all deals were going to be done in June for us to announce them all standing side by side on Arsenal.com at midnight July 1st.
Even the mega rich clubs who have more money than sense are not able to work that way, why? because the selling clubs, agents and players have a say in a transfer. It is why Cavaini has still not left Napoli as yet but you can bet your bottom dollar that he will be elsewhere when the window has closed.
Arsenal like almost every other club in Europe will have been in club, agent, player discussions for months now, some targets closer than others while some need more work to get done, it requires patience, perspective and a little understanding that these things are not as simple as clicking ‘Buy Now’ on your mouse button.
It is usually right about now that I get this thrown at me.. ‘We’ve been in this position before, needed players and nothing happened. Why should anything be different?’
I made myself dinner one night, was so hungry and looked forward to tucking into my munch but as I walked to the table, I had left my chair in the middle of the kitchen and forgot that it was there, I knocked into it and my food fell to the floor. Now that was a reason to curse and moan but I don’t think I will drop my dinner whenever I make it because I do not always leave a chair in the middle of the room and even if I did, I probably wouldn’t hit it again.
Ok, that was rather long winded and probably wasn’t very relevant but what I am trying to say is that we need to add a little context and not do what us football fans tend to do which is group everything together. For example ‘Another bloody French kid’ but I shall come to that in a moment. Going back to the what is different this time round, well if you ungroup our previous 10 years then the answer should smack you upside your head so be careful.
The new Emirates deal along with the Puma deal will increase our revenue to roughly £70m a year which is light years to what we have had to work with since we moved to the Emirates.
You could throw the cash reserves from previous transfers at us but I believe our income and cash reserves were very much linked. There is no longer a need to keep powder dry because the money will keep coming in annually. Time will tell and perhaps I will point back to this in the future.
Another reason why I believe things are different is because we are shedding players like nobody’s business. Why would we be doing that if we did not intend to add new players?
Removing the whole grouping, needing to be angrier than the other guy Arsenal emotion for a moment and look at it objectively and everything points to new transfers. A higher tier of transfer also. While the emotion has been removed for a second, let me continue if I may.
There is a hell of a lot of skepticism whenever we bring in a young player, it doesn’t matter if it doesn’t cost us anything, news of a young player seems to make eyes roll and collective heads shake. Almost as if the top players of today were never 18-20 year olds.
I find it interesting looking back at players like Zidane when they were just potential. They were obviously talented very rarely do they have the same impact as they do when the blossom.
I am not saying that Mr Sanogo is the answer to all our problems but he bloody well might be one day, equally he may not make the grade but the youth policy is very important as long as the likes of Gibbs, Szczesny Wilshere, Ramsey, the Ox and Walcott keep improving and turning into top class players.
We now have the financial backing to buy quality but that does not mean that we should stop finding and educating the best 15-20 year olds. Just as other big clubs such as Bayern, Barca and the like.
While the likes of Higuain coming in is exciting and believe me it is, I am also genuinely excited about watching the likes of Dan Crowley develop and also Yaya Sanogo.
On that same very theme, Hector Bellerin has signed a new deal with Arsenal which is very good news. He has come on leaps and bounds last season and must be banging on the first team squad door. As an attacking right back he is fantastic. Has excellent attacking movement off the ball and I hope he gets some game time in the league cup next season.
I cannot wait for the Arsenal to return, even the idea of pre season football is exciting. Not long to wait.
’till the next time.
