Van Persie benched, allowed round pegs in round holes

I watched to see who would join Adebayor. Arsene had a choice from three. He could have played Diaby on the left with Nasri floating around Adebayor

What a thrilling, exciting and entertaining game that was.

I do not think I have ever watched a side that was so exciting going forward yet shocking defensively. That was clearly a match from the Kevin Keegan football manager manual.

Both teams wanted to go forward, get on the ball and create chances, both sides left huge spaces in between their respective midfield and defence.

The back four was the same which ended in the 3-1 defeat of Everton on the weekend. Arsene scraped the idea of having Song at right back which was good to see.

Yesterday I wrote I expect Arsene to revert back to the Champions League template of 4-5-1. The question that we await is which one of Diaby and Nasri will start. Van Persie will probably play on the left where I personally think he is totally wasted and ineffective

I did not expect Arsene to drop / rest Van Persie as he is one of Arsene’s seniors. Seniors rarely get dropped.

One poster yesterday (Gazzap) was spot on with the line up and he said that Van Persie cannot play in a 4-5-1 which I agree on totally.

Van Persie benched, allowed round pegs in round holes and it showed from the first minute.

I watched to see who would join Adebayor. Arsene had a choice from three. He could have played Diaby on the left with Nasri floating around Adebayor. Cesc could have been pushed furter forward with Denilson and Diaby petrolling the midfield behind him. Instead it was the Frenchman Diaby who was left to supporting Adebayor.

Diaby made a positive return against Everton by showing good feet and setting up Walcott for the third goal. Last night he was magestic.

Diaby is often compared to Vieira, while in physical appearence this is true, in playing style they are completely different. Diaby is technially far superior to Vieira. Diaby is a powerful creative touch player whilest Vieira was/is a powerful box to box tackler.

I was surprised about how sharp he was after being out for so long. One piece of skill in the first half took my breath away. He was on the right side of the pitch, turned to his left and switched the ball back onto his right foot which bambozled the defender. His passing was spot on and drove at the Turks all evening.

Those who slated him for being one footed should take another look at his goal. A wonderful performance from the big man.

Denilson has been rotating with Cesc this season in the middle of midfield, both taking turns to go forward and sit back. This job is more suited to Diaby who is different to Cesc and would provide something else to think about going forward.

Cesc Fabregas was back to his best and provided two killer passes in the first half. The first saw Adebayor running through on goal and I wondered if he would finish it. He has been clean through early in previous matches and missed, this time he showed the eyes to the keeper and slotted past him.

Cesc’s second assist was even better. Theo made his trademark diagonal run and Cesc’s pass was eye of the neddel stuff. Fine finishing from the ‘Englishman at Arsenal’

The atmosphere at the ground might have had a positive effect on the side. They would not have been able to play with the same tempo as against Hull with that kind of hostile support. It may have inspired the side into life.

Our defence was very square and were caught many times, it is understandable as it is the first full 90 minutes that they have played together. They were not really helped from a 5 man midfield who only wanted to attack, not that I am complaining in the end.

So the victory puts us firmly in the driving seat to win the group and it may even allow us to rest some players in the last game of the group away to Porto.

It will be interesting to see what Arsene does during an away match in the next round of the Champions League should we progess.

Wenger rightly praised the side after the game.

“I am very proud of the team. The average age was 23 and I am proud because we came in and tried to dictate the game in a very heated atmosphere.

“It is very pleasing that they seemed to play with no fear. I am pleased to see it works.

“We came here and had a go. We started strong, we remained quite strong and we finished strong.”
