Arsene Wenger was answering questions from the clubs shareholders and highlighted lack of strength in defence against the long ball. He also said that he wanted a creative player which is interesting
Another lovely morning and my spirits are certainly up. Doesn’t the sun make life so much more enjoyable?
After all the negative news from our club for the last few months we have some positives to add to the sunshine.
We have been calling out for loyalty from our players and it has come from a player that alot of fans suggested was arrogant and full of his own hype. Adebayor has come out and put the Barcelona stories to the sword. Well if he didn’t do it, then he would have today as Barca looked like a sorry excuse for a team after being demolished 4-1 by arch rivals Real Madrid last night.
Ade said: “As a footballer you want to make history and leave your name at a club.
“I hope I can do that here as I love Arsenal. Hopefully I can make some more history.
“I’m at the right team at the right time, playing good football and scoring goals so I’m happy.
I think we need more players to publicly do this and show that we are a strong squad who want to stick together and fight for the cause.
Adebayor also said that this was his first full season in England as he came in half way through the season in 2006/2007 and was back up in the next season. His goal return is pretty impressive for his first full campaign.
I hope the rest of his game improves as well because we know that it isn’t always the best. If he can make strides like his has done then there is no reason why he cannot get up to the world class status that he desires.
More good news is that Arsene has publicly admitted that he is in the market for a powerful defender who can defend against the likes of Drogba, Crouch etc

We were all expecting a defender to come in to replace one of Gallas and Toure which could well be Kolo, but lets see. But the news of Arsene being interested in signing a creative player is one that will have us linked with every attacking player in European football. I wonder if he is talking about a wide player when he says creative. Maybe he knows more about the Hleb situation than we do and he expects him to leave. I hope it is a player who can dribble and open up the opposition to mix up our passing game a bit because it could have been key at times this season when we were not at our passing best.
One creative player that seems to be linked with us continually is Portsmouth wide man Niko Kranjcar which would be very interesting. Although not the flying winger than I crave us to have he is a player who can come in from wide areas which allows to fullbacks to continue their attacking jobs and has an eye for goal. Eduardo would be pleased anyway.
Going back to the Real Madrid vs Barcelona game last night, it was sad to see the way Barca have turned out. I just felt that we will not have the chance to get revenge on them for the Champions League final a few years ago. They are likely to break up and wholesale changes are likely to happen. Apparently they have a list of players that they want to keep and they want to sell a whole batch of players and that includes Thierry Henry. After all that chasing and tapping up to just discard him after one season just shows what ‘buying superstars’ can do for you.
I was reading A Cultured Left Foot, one of the best Arsenal blogs out there and came across a comment from Josef K I felt that I had to add it here because it is nice to hear Arsenal fans who talk sense and see things how they are. If you are reading Josef K, I hope you don’t mind me adding this here.
What if ‘in all probabilities’ they do not get paid off in terms of success.
For the sake of argument; say we did not sign Eduardo for 8.5 million, say we signed David Villa for a fee similar to Fernando Torres 25million.
Say we signed him for 5 million a year for five years – so that’s another 25 million spent, 50 million in all.
So all in all that would be 25 million out the first year, plus 5 million in wages, that’s 30 million gone from the P&L – almost the entire profit for the year.
Plus you have still got 20 million wages sitting as a current liability on your balance sheet, alongside the debt interest and whatever else.
So your profits have evaporated straight away and your balance sheet is weaker – but you have David Villa.
Now you are more vulnerable to takeover. Nice.
Not only that but say like Eduardo, David Villa takes 4 months to acclimatise and thus doesn’t help you out a huge amount on the pitch.
After that 4 months like Eduardo, David Villa scores a few goals and it looks like the title is on.
But then some clogger from Birmingham breaks Davids leg and leaves the jagged bone sticking out of his sock.
You finish the season 4 points behind the winners, just like the season before.
So what now?
Are the ‘fans’ satisfied?
How many shirts do you think 50 million quid is? I’ll tell you – 1,428,571 @ £35 a pop. Unlikely to make our money back there then, especially as the incremental revenue from additional shirts less shirts otherwise sold is going to be negligible. And we certainly didn’t’ make our money back on the pitch, did we?
This my friend is why they say ‘Arsene knows’. Because he does.
Arsenal Football club cannot sustain transfers that ‘will satisfy the fans’ at the moment with the issues surrounding the club – in the future yes, but not now.
If some fans want to mortgage the future for their own myopic view then I for one say we don’t need those fans because they will do more harm than good.
Arsene has proved time and again that he can pull the rabbit out of the hat for relative peanuts – Sagna 6 million, Eduardo 8.5 Million. No risk to the club, but no ’satisfied fans’? Or are there; because I for one, and everyone I know is damned well happy with those two players, and with Ade, with Hleb, with Cesc, with Flam(!), with Kolo etc etc etc etc etc. A couple more like them and we are away, four points ain’t a lot.
I hope some Championship manager fans screw up their piece of paper and think about reality.
Have a good day. Drop your view in the comments.
Until tomorrow.
