Theo Walcott is such a threat for the opposition and such a treat for our supporters. When he is on song he is unplayable, he looks in fantastic shape right now, powerful, fast and confident
As far as weeks go in the football world, that was a pretty good one wasn’t it? We currently sit in 4th place with us and Aston Villa playing the same amount of games, it is back in our hands now and the boys are playing some good attacking football. There are so many positives to talk about, I do not know where to start. The game on Saturday was just a joy but to be honest it could have been the same in many of our scoreless draws at home this season. It is hard to know where the game would have gone had Walcott and Arshavin not forced the first goal within 80 seconds. There was not much difference in personnel against Sunderland and Fulham yet the outcome was completely different.
Alex Song and Denilson were unbelievable in central midfield, they really ran the show, Even most of the pre opinioned fans have had to eat their chunk of humble pie from the microwave with a dashing of cream. I have heard the ‘lets wait to see them face a big team’ argument normally said with a hint of ‘I don’t want to be proved wrong’ But I seem to remember Song and Denilson really stepping up at home to Liverpool and Spurs when we were down to ten men. I am not saying that Tottenham are a big side but everyone knows that it is always a battle against them given that they are our closest rivals.
As much as I am very excited about having Cesc Fabregas back in the team I will feel very sad for one of those players who miss out if they continue to play the way they have of late.
Theo Walcott is such a threat for the opposition and such a treat for our supporters. When he is on song he is unplayable, he looks in fantastic shape right now, powerful, fast and confident. He is still rusty and will get better towards the end of the season. If we could only add a couple months to the season we would be in with a shout of clawing back points on the top and fighting for the league, yes it is a bit late time but I have no doubts that we have the squad to do it.
Arsene was talking about the transformation in the speedster.
“Compared to one year ago there is no comparison,” said Wenger
“That is what people have problems to accept because at that age every three months you improve. You can never predict how much he will improve but there is still a lot more to come from Theo. He had a good start [against Blackburn] and he became stronger and stronger. He gives us something which is important as well when we play at home when he goes behind the defenders. He creates room and has a direct game. We need that. I don’t know [how big a player he will be in the rest of the season] but it’s important to have him back because he gives you something that can make a difference in any game.”
That is the mistake that many are making with many of our young squad members. People tend to forget that Denilson, Song, and Bendtner are not the finished article, they will get better. Look at the Song of Fulham away a few years ago and the one that played on Saturday. Totally different players. Look at experience players like Robert Pires in his first season compared to the invincible. Some fans need to stop writing off players and have some perspective.
Andrey Arshavin looks like a pocket sized genius, an absolutely fantastic player. He has been playing in the hole behind the striker because of his superb vision and passing but it is almost like he is wasted in that position which sounds like a silly thing to say because that is the game changing position where you can find that final pass or score goals from but on the left he gets the chance to run from the half way line and beat players. I feel we have missed that in quite a long time, I cannot remember the last player to do that the way he does. Perhaps Theirry Henry was the last player I remember pulling out to the left receiving the ball deep and drifting past players.
Arshavin kept getting the ball out wide and running at the right back, he didn’t know if he would go outside or inside him and it opened up so much for us. Samir Nasri is a much better player from a central position in my mind, that is why the second half worked so well.
I am actually surprised about how well Arshavin tracks back and makes tackles, that certainly was a bonus to me.
Hull City on Tuesday in the cup and we will be firm favourites no matter which teams gets sent out to play. I expect Gibbs, Vela, Eduardo, Eboue to start the rest will be decided by Arsene.
I felt no way about celebrating the Tottenham goals, they have done us a favour now they can get back to losing matches.
I suppose we had to hear one bit of bad news somewhere. Tomas Rosicky has had yet another set back which for me personally is upsetting as he is one of my favourite Arsenal players *sniff sniff* It is said that the set back is only a week setback but you know how these things work out sometimes. A week turns to two, times that by another 2 and so on until Wenger claims that he should be back before his 35th birthday.
Wenger said:
“Tomas has had a little set-back of one week so he will be out for two weeks again, We have to be a bit more patient than in the start. I told you two weeks ago that he would be back in full training but he will not. He’ll be back in full training in two weeks time now.”
As much as we all want him back, I am sure we can cope with Arshavin, Nasri, Walcott and Eboue until the end of the season and at least the start of the next.
Fingers crossed that this week can continue as last week ended.
Hull City previews tomorrow.
