Theo Walcott is certainly an interesting topic of conversation. Has so much in his locker. Ridiculous speed, good finisher and very direct but my question would be how much can he improve technically. How much does he have in his locker to learn
Well today is Friday, it most certainly is. It is the day before the weekend, the end of the week, the time when you subconsciously slack off at work and it is also a day when Vermaelen is supposed to put that pen to that paper, well after some jogging and physical tests.
The club are obviously not saying a work about anything at this moment as you would expect so perhaps we could hear something late into the afternoon or perhaps even on Monday, we shall see.
The England under 21s played last night and I watched most of it. Theo was dropped down to the bench which still seems a strange thing. Full England international, plays regularly for Arsenal but after an average 45 minutes get dropped. Anyway, I thought the Spanish were the better team and just got things wrong in the final third. The technical differences were quite vast I thought even if England did finish with a 2-0 score line.
Theo’s cameo was quite impressive, burning past the full back with ease and having the composure to pick out James Milner (Is he really still under 21?) to score the second.
Theo Walcott is certainly an interesting topic of conversation. Has so much in his locker. Ridiculous speed, good finisher and very direct but my question would be how much can he improve technically. How much does he have in his locker to learn. Will he ever be able to play in tight spaces?
By no means am I writing a player of that age off, no no no. He will get much better in practically everything that he does but as a late starter (aged 10 or 11 I think) I wonder how far he can go when it comes to dribbling without pace, finding the correct passes etc.
I still think that to get the best out of Walcott’s tools he needs to play down the middle, where he can use his pace and finishing. Wenger knows that Walcott’s all round game is not yet what it should be for an Arsenal striker, so he continues to ply his trade on the right. Playing against a side that play a high line with Rosicky, Cesc and Arshavin behind him Theo would score tons of goals, the problem starts when we face teams that sit deep and pack the middle, this is when our players rely on their technical qualities, something that Theo is still working on. This is why I think the 4-3-3 could suit him. A wide role in a front 3 would be ideal for Walcott. Defensively he is not strong, although he chases more nowadays so playing as a 3 would allow him to switch positions with his other two forwards which would allow him with more freedom and more chances at goal.
When everyone if fit Theo may end up being a super sub again and a rather lethal one at that but I am not sure if that will help his development. Anyway, just something I wanted to get off my chest. The manager will have his ideas on what he wants to do with him.
After all the hoohar and youtube compilations it appears that the Chamakh rumours are just that, rumours. His club Bordeaux have denied any contact with Arsenal.
Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud said:
“I don’t know where it came from, but I never heard any Arsenal representatives since (Sylvain) Wiltord, which means almost eight years.”
Well thats that then. Unless we preparing a bid after having sneaky conversations with the player. Nah! I am thinking of Chelsea.
Anyway, nothing else to talk about now so back tomorrow. Hopefully I will be able to comment on the Wenger and Vermaelen interviews.
