Vermaelen’s second goal got me stood up way after our celebrations in the pub, continuously clapping at the quality of our new center back. When he picked up the ball in the final third striding forward

Arsenal 4 Wigan 0 – Premier League
Our second home match of the season turned into our second training session. We only really got into second gear at times to keep the engine running smoothly. This fixture was pretty much perfect after the midweek Champions League drama.
The players could ease their feet off the accelerator and play their football. Wigan didn’t appear to come to the Emirates with much of a game plan as they spent most of the game chasing after the ball.
Before the kick off I was a little bemused that Eboue was his preferred choice in attack, only because we were playing at home against a team that you expect to create chances against. When the side are playing away against good quality then I expect some added defensive steel in the forward positions to help the midfield but at home I thought Wenger may release the shackles a little.
Well it turns out that our manager was fully vindicated in his decision to play the versatile right sided player.
In a team full of ball players, having a player who can carry the ball brings a great balance to an attack. Abou Diaby showed for our first goal in Liege how important it can be to be able to take two players out of the game by running past them. Manchester United won many games with Ronaldo due to this factor and Emmanuel Eboue has more than enough ability to help Arsenal in the final third.
Many can rightfully question his end product at times, you cannot question his technique or speed. Time and time again in the final third he was serve inside or outside his marker which would open up space for Van Persie and Eduardo.
I loved our first goal because Bendtner apart we lack someone physical in the air, someone who can open the scoring from a set piece when our football isn’t quite showing the end product it deserves. Van Persie’s corner was perfect and Vermaelen leaped fantastically well to power the header past Kirkland.
The first half was certainly a half from Arsenal that we have seen many times before. In total control of the game, dominating in every area, creating chances but missing countless chances. Almost as if the Arsenal squad were brought up playing a game of not putting it in the goal and the players are still adjusting to the new rules of in between the posts.
Vermaelen’s second goal got me stood up way after our celebrations in the pub, continuously clapping at the quality of our new center back. When he picked up the ball in the final third striding forward, my mind flashed back to the Manchester City match last week when he struck a powerful shot which was saved, this time he pushed it wide, found himself in a good position just outside the penalty area and was calling for the return. Eboue who had popped over to the left played the right pass and Vermaelen excited the perfect finish by curling the ball first time into the top corner.
Vermaelen’s finish was the type of finish you expect more often from Robin Van Persie, such was the quality. How many central defenders stride forward, play a one-two and bend the ball into the top corner. The more of this guy I see the more I like.
Arsene sold a player who is unlikely to improve and is approaching the latter years of his career for £16 million and he has bought a left sided, leader with wonderful technique for £6 million less. The best news is that he is only 23 years old and has so much room for improvement.
Abou Diaby had another inconsistent 90 minutes. Twisting and turning past a player then giving it away the next moment. Eduardo was pretty quiet on the left of the three but that is sometimes that is the sacrifice you make for Eduardo being in the side. Not always involved in the play but give him a chance in the box and BANG goal.
We all thought that Eduardo had scored the third but in fact it was Eboue who diverted the ball into the net, nothing less than he deserved.
Tomas Rosicky came on late in the second half and once again looked sharp and inventive. He makes the game look very simple and graceful. On current form Tomas Rosicky is a more productive player than his captain. The problem is, both players are not yet match fit and that is exciting.
Defensively the team still looked shaky, even a Wigan side who looked way out of their depth could count themselves as unlucky not to ave come away from the Emirates without a goal to their names, especially given the fact that a goal was disallowed for offside.
Cesc completed the scoring in injury time from close range after good work from Van Persie and Bendtner. Cesc didn’t look best pleased after his goal, perhaps his physical treatment from the Wigan players left him a little peeved.
All in all it was a routine victory, the team will face trickier games as the season goes on but this could be the spring board that the team need to get on a run of victories.
The seniors will put their feet up in midweek as the kids get to face a rampant West Brom team on Tuesday evening.
