Wigan match thoughts and predictions

Cesc Fabregas, Sami Nasri and Robin Van Persie will be key to this game. Song and Denilson will help the defence to see out a clean sheet and it is down to the trio of attacking players to find openings

Well the moment of truth is almost upon us. The supporters, the manager and the media are all asking one question . Which Arsenal side will turn up today?

We have been here before, on more than one occasion. The noises from our players before this game sound positive. Van Persie, Clichy and the manager have all said that this game is more important than the Chelsea game which is easy to say after collecting three points but for the long term, there could well be some truth in that.

Perhaps the captain’s armband on another player can encourage a different mentality against the lesser sides of the league. We have to close Wigan down from the first minute and whilst on the ball make sure we do everything with real purpose. Sharp quick passing, at a real positive tempo. Even if we are not in form, that attitude would usually be enough to see us through with 3 points.

It will be interesting to see what happens at central defence today. Silvestre had jumped above Toure in the pecking order but his inconsistent form may have let him slip down again. The 4th choice central defender a few weeks ago appears to be 1st choice from the defenders available. Funny how things can change in football.

Listening to Johan Djourou speak on Arsenal TV and he strikes me as a very down to earth, likeable guy. I hope he turns out to be just the defender that we have needed and goes from strength to strength. If he keeps improving it could well be a case of who partners Djourou from now on.

The rest of the team is likely to be the same after the Chelsea result. I am a little concerned about playing a defensive Song in the middle with Denilson on the right in a home game where we need to probe and create plenty chances. Eboue would give us more balance but he has been out for a while now and will not be rushed back into the side.

Our other midfield options are young players that Wenger will not want to pressure them with the burden of trying to change a game. Especially Jack Wilshere who would have been a superb option on the right if he was a few years older.

Mean Lean’s prediction

Cesc Fabregas, Sami Nasri and Robin Van Persie will be key to this game. Song and Denilson will help the defence to see out a clean sheet and it is down to the trio of attacking players to find openings in a much improved Wigan side of late. If the tempo is right and the players give 100% then it should be too much for Wigan. Adebayor is due a goal so I am backing him to open the scoring with Van Persie adding a second.

Arsenal 2 (Adebayor, Van Persie) Wigan 0
