With all the well deserved praise for the two scintilating attacking performances from our youngsters with the wins over Sheffield United and Wigan, one thing seems to be missing from the debate.

Forget, for one moment if you will, the wonderful 9 goals our enterprising and attacking flair produced, and instead lets take a closer look at the other column. I am referring of course to the perhaps more impressive, 0 goals conceded.

OK, so the Sheffield attack isn’t the most fearsome around (although they have scored more goals than second placed Birmingham City), but Wigan have some powerful and dangerous forwards in Amr Zaki, Valencia and the excellent De Ridder. Indeed they have averaged more than a goal a game so far in the Premiership.

How come then that our first team central core of Toure/Gallas/Silvestre and Almunia, have conceded 9 goals against the likes of Fulham, Hull, Stoke and the scum – an average of over 2 a game.

I wonder if the Carling Cup core of Djourou, Song and Fabianski would have fared better against such opposition?

For me I think they most certainly would have conceded fewer.

I would be happy to see them start a Premier League game sometime – perhaps even against Wigan on the 6th December.

What do you think?
