Flashback to 3rd November 2007…
It was the 92nd minute of the game. Arsenal were trailing 1-2 to, guess who, Man Utd, at the Emirates Stadium. Then, out of nowhere, a particular Arsenal player shot at goal amidst chaos in the opposition’s penalty box. This shot was eventually counted as a goal, and we were saved.
The press would go on and heap massive praise on thie Arsenal player, who was incidentally the captain of the team too. His name was none other than William Gallas. He would then go on and score crucial goals against Wigan and Chelsea. What a captain, screamed fans and critics alike.
Fast-forward to 23rd February 2008…
The score was again 2-1, but this time Arsenal were leading. Then, again out of nowhere, a penalty was given to Arsenal’s opposition, Birmingham. Captain Gallas broke down, and weeped at the halfway line. The penalty was converted, and the press was reporting how Arsenal’s lead was cut, how Eduardo was injured, how amazing Alex McLeish and James McFadden were, how Theo Walcott came of age, and of course, of a captain could possibly act in the way Gallas did.
I personally am not very favorable of Gallas as captain. Why? I don’t think he is that influential as opposed to Adams and Vieira, or even Gilberto. Gallas is turning 31 in August, and I am quite sure he won’t have a lot of time left at the club. So, after he’s gone, who will be the next Skipper?
The current vice-captain is none other than Kolo Abib Toure, who at 27 has many more years ahead of him. If he does become the next captain it would seem almost expected and natural. However, after what happened to Gilberto this season, and many influential players improving rapidly this season, another choice of captain is not impossible.
Firstly, there is the fabulous Francesc Fabregas Soler. Amazingly, at 20, he is one of the longest serving player at Arsenal. Especially this season, he is involved in almost every Arsenal attack, not unlike Captain Gerrard at Liverpool, or Vice-Captain Keane at Spurs.
For: Definitely the most important and biggest name in the Arsenal squad, just like old Thierry was.
Against: Too young, could wait another couple of years.
Then, there is the the other half of the midfield axis, dear Matthieu Flamini. Hardly a first-team player before this season, he has improved and has since become one of the best defensive midfielder in the league. He has also become one of the most influential member of the team and one of the dirving force behind our current title challenge.
For: Similar to Vieira’s influence if not his playing style. Oh, and of course, he is French.
Against: Many bigger names in front of him. Just like how Steve Finnan would never become captain at Liverpool.
And there is Sheyi Emmanuel Adebayor. Our top marksman this season, he is without doubt one of the reasons why we are doing so well in the league. Came of age after Henry’s departure and Van Persie’s absence, he is also immensely popular in the Arsenal camp.
For: Key striker of the team. Think Owen, Henry, even Keane.
Against: Am I the only one who thinks he is a possible captain?
So dear Gooners, who do you think would be the next skipper and why?
