Article sent after Aston Villa match, apologies for the delay
I went to the Villa game on Saturday and of course it did indeed turn out to be utterly pointless for us. But I suppose having dropped 13 points from Fulham, Hull, Sunderland, Stoke and the Scum – getting no points at all against an excellent Villa side was not exactly unexpected (leaving aside the United game of course).
Sitting there getting more and more frustrated you just knew from early on that we were not going to get anything from the match. I don’t altogether go with the accepted perception that the players weren’t up for it or that they weren’t bothered. To me they seemed to be trying as hard as they could but what was glaringly obvious was that there was so little movement off the ball. If you don’t make space for yourself you cant expect to receive a pass, and even someone with the gifted vision as Cesc will be forced to make passes which run too high a risk of being intercepted. It happened so many times you would have thought they would have been told by someone – at least at half-time.

1/ Why, when it was so obvious we were unable to carve out any sort of goal threat, did you wait till 29 minutes from the end to make any tactical changes?
2/ Why, when two of our key midfielders were on a booking from the 17th minute onwards, were they both allowed to stay on the pitch throughout the whole of the game, risking a sending off and suspension? Its not like they were creating anything was it?
3/ Why did you not say anything to Almunia about his nonsensical and continual booting of the ball up the field – almost always to a Villa player? Have we suddenly lost the ability to retain the ball and pass our way from the back?
Forgive me for repeating myself, but as the game itself turned out for us – it was utterly pointless!
